A terrestrial bromeliad endemic to Ecuador where it is known from five Andean subpopulations, three of them in Pichincha province. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network and, since few protected areas contain similar habitats on the western slopes of the Andes, the species is seriously threatened by habitat conversion to croplands and fires. Classified as Endangered by the IUCN in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998). Reassessed as Vulnerable under the IUCN Categories and Criteria version 3.1. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums.
