An epiphytic bromeliad endemic to Ecuador where it is known from two collections from the Yangana-Valladolid road. Not known to occur in Ecuador’s protected areas network but the locale is near the Parque Nacional Podocarpus. The species' habitat has largely been converted to pasture and both collections are from remnants. Not yet found in remote areas of the region. Cultivated in botanical gardens because of its exotic black flowers. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.
