Justification: An epiphytic bromeliad endemic to Ecuador and the only Guzmania species with purple flowers. Published in 1889 as Thecophyllum poortmannii André from a collection by H. Poortman between Cangonama and Chinchanga, Loja province. No collections have been made since and the area has been deforested and mostly converted to croplands raising the possibility that the species is extinct. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species. |
