Justification: An epiphytic or terrestrial bromeliad endemic to Ecuador. Three of the four recorded subpopulations are from Bolívar province: the type collection on the Tablas road; at km 100 of the Echeandia-Salinas road; and near Guaranda. The locale of the fourth collection is unknown. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network, but may be found in similar habitats of the Reserva Ecológica Los Ilinizas. The principal threat is conversion of forest to croplands. In the 1997 IUCN Red List, the species was classified as Indeterminate; now the information available information suggests the Endangered category. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species. |
