A subshrub endemic to Ecuador where it is known from only three collections. The type was recorded by A. Humboldt and A. Bonpland at the beginning of the nineteenth century "in Ecuador". Two other collections were recorded by W. Jameson, who mentions in his Synopsis Plantarum Aequatorienisium (1865) "Hab. Azuai, in rocky places, at 14,509 feet elevation." Not known to occur in Ecuador's protected areas network but potentially inside the Parque Nacional Cajas. Before 1991 D. steyermarkii was considered a variety of this taxon: D. violacea var. lehmanniana. Probably the collections in the National Herbarium of Ecuador are D. steyermarkii. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.
