Recorded from two collections in the nineteenth century, one close to Balao, Guayas province, and another at the Hacienda El Recreo, north of San Vicente in Manabí province. Additional subpopulations may occur inside the Manglares-Churute and Machalilla protected areas. The lack of recent collections may be due to the destruction of the type in the Berlin herbarium during the Second World War. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the main threat to the species.
