Justification:
Listed as Vulnerable in view of its very fragmented and small areas of occupancy. Teinobasis alluaudi depends on coastal swamp forests, which once covered large areas of the coastal forest belt from southern Somalia to southern Mozambique. Now this habitat type is reduced to tiny forest pockets. The largest populations were found in the Ngezi Forest (Pemba Island) and in the Jozani Forest (Zanzibar). Although these forests have been reduced to a small fragment of their original size, they are more or less well protected at the moment. Teinobasis alluaudi is assumed to occur in more appropriate habitats along the coastal belt of Tanzania and Mozambique, but the question is whether populations will be found before the habitat is destroyed. An overview of the remaining populations and taxonomic problems is given in Clausnitzer (2003).
History:
1996 Critically Endangered
1994 Endangered (Groombridge 1994)
1990 Endangered (IUCN 1990)
1988 Endangered (IUCN Conservation Monitoring Centre 1988)
1986 Endangered (IUCN Conservation Monitoring Centre 1986)

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: The species has a disjunct distribution: south-east Malawi, Seychelles, Madagascar, south-east Kenya, east Tanzania. In Est Africa it has been recorded from Buda forest (south-east Kenya), Mkuwadzi Forest at Nkhata Bay (Malawi) and Rufiji Delta, Zanzibar and Pemba Island (Tanzania).

In the Seychelles, it is known from the islands of Silhouette and Mahé at both low and high elevations (Blackman and Pinhey 1967, ). This species is very scarce.

Population: Population size is unknown.
Population Trend: Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Dense coastal swamp forests (often seasonal). Clear streams in forest. In 1997 the species was recorded in Terminalia forest at sea level (Samways pers. comm.).
Systems: Terrestrial; Freshwater

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Habitat removal for agriculture is probably the biggest threat. Destruction of coastal swamp forest: on the African mainland most of these forests are already cleared and turned into rice fields.
