The only species of a monotypic genus endemic to Ecuador, and known only from three old collections. One was recorded near Hacienda El Recreo, north of Bahía de Caraquez, in 1892 or 1898. Another is from an unknown locale in Guayas province. Last recorded in 1933, near Naranjapata, downriver from Huigra in the Río Chanchán valley, Chimborazo province. The holotype was destroyed in the Berlin herbarium during the Second World War, but the surviving isotypes show that the species is distinctive and valid (D. Wasshausen, pers. comm.). Rediscovering this species is one of the highest priorities in the study of Ecuador's endemic species, but the search is complicated by the fact that no botanical specimens of this species exist in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.
