Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2017
Date Assessed: 2015-08-21
Assessor(s): Rakotoarinivo, M. & Dransfield, J.
Reviewer(s): Faranirina, L. & Members of the IUCN SSC Madagascar Plant Specialist Group
Facilitator/Compiler(s): Ravololomanana, N.
Justification:
Endemic to a single river to the north of Taolagnaro. Individuals are known from one unprotected locality. The extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are both 4 km², although the actual area occupied by this species is thought to be less than 4 km². The species is locally relatively abundant with a population of about 450 trees. The clearance of vegetation along the river for agricultural expansion is causing a decrease the area of occupancy and this is the major threat to the species. Plants and seed are also harvested for the horticultural trade, and the trunks are sometimes felled to make temporary canoes. The species is therefore assessed as Critically Endangered.

Population [top]

Population:About 450 trees have been seen in the single known site for this palm (Dransfield, J. and Beentje, H. 1995). The population is declining.
Current Population Trend:Decreasing
Additional data:
Number of mature individuals:450Continuing decline of mature individuals:Yes
Population severely fragmented:No
Continuing decline in subpopulations:Yes

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:Growing in the slowly flowing water of a lowland (10 to 50 m Asl) river, 50 to 150 cm deep. Seedlings start their lives as submerged aquatics with flaccid foliage; once the stem has emerged, leaves become rigid.
Systems:Freshwater
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat:Yes

Use and Trade [top]

Use and Trade: Plants and seeds are harvested for the horticultural trade and the palm trunks are occasionally felled to make canoes.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): There are a number of threats to this species including habitat clearance along the river banks for agricultural expansion and the harvesting of plants and seeds for the horticultural trade. Palms are also sometimes felled to make canoes.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: The site is not in a protected area. Urgent conservation action is required for this species.
