Justification:
Endemic to one river to the north of Taolagnaro. Individuals are known from one unprotected locality. The extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are both less than 4 km². The species is relatively abundant with a population of about 450 trees. Plants and seed are harvested for the horticultural trade. Trunks are sometimes felled to make temporary canoes and there is clearance of the vegetation along the river which decreases the area of occupancy. The species therefore qualifies for listing as Critically Endangered.

Range Description:	Endemic to a single site to the north of Taolagnaro in the extreme southeast of Madagascar.

Population:	About 450 trees have been seen in the single known site for this palm. The population is declining.

Habitat and Ecology:	Growing in the slowly flowing water of a lowland (10 to 50 m asl) river, 50 to 150 cm deep. Seedlings start their lives as submerged aquatics with flaccid foliage; once the stem has emerged, leaves become rigid.

Major Threat(s):	There are a number of threats to this species including habitat clearance along the river banks for agricultural expansion and the plants and their seed are harvested for the horticultural trade. Palms are also sometime felled to make canoes.
