Justification: Known from eight widely separated sites between Ifanadiana and Marojejy, in the east of Madagascar. The extent of occurrence is well over 37,000 km², but the area of occupancy is 1,856 km², within the threshold for the Vulnerable category. Almost all of the known sites are located inside protected areas but those outside are highly threatened mainly because of habitat loss due to logging and agricultural expansion. The species is also targeted for its leaves which are used for thatching and weaving, this may involve felling the palms hence there is continuing decline in both the extant and quality of the habitat and in number of mature individuals. From the surveys conducted it is estimated that the population size numbers only about 200 mature individual,. hence although this species meets the requirements for a Vulnerable listing under the range criteria, the species is listed as Endangered based on the small population size. |
