Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered B1ab(iii) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2016
Date Assessed: 2016-07-28
Assessor(s): Rokocaucau, M.
Reviewer(s): Oldfield, S. & Keppel, G.

Facilitator/Compiler(s): Rivers, M.C.
Justification:
This tree species is endemic to Fiji along the Seaqaqa plateau and it is listed as Critically Endangered. It is found in a single location and the extent of occurrence is less than 16 km2 (the estimate is 5.5 km2 but it was changed to 16 km 2 to match the area of occupancy).  There is continuing decline because of its habitat loss due to logging, fires and agricultural development.
Previously published Red List assessments:

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:This species is endemic to the Seaqaqa plateau in Vanua Levu, Fiji.  Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 5.5 km2. The area of occupancy (AOO) will be similar in range to the extent of occurrence, but when measured with a 2 x 2 km2 grid it is 16 km2, hence the EOO is changed to 16 km2 as it cannot be smaller than the AOO.

Population [top]

Population:The species is known only from the type, collected in 1947. It is highly scattered along the Seaqaqa plateau and in the vicinity of Natua, Macuata and along the Korovuli river.
Current Population Trend:Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:Tree of 7 m high found at an elevation of 100 -200 m. Trees were reported to exist in patches of forest in open rolling country.
Systems:Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat:Yes

Use and Trade [top]

Use and Trade: There is no trade or use known for this species.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): The threats to this species are increasing frequency of fires, land clearing for agriculture and a small amount of logging.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: There are no ex situ collections and it is not in a protected area. Conservation recommendations include: i) ex situ collections including seed collections, ii) awareness and engagement of land owners and regulatory authorities, and iii) area protection and management (fires). There is also a need for more research into population size, distribution and trends, habitat requirement, ecology and ecosystem services, and propagation methods.
