Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: This species inhabits rivers of low to high current velocity, generally occuring in freshwater but sometimes in slightly brackish river mouths. It is normally more abundant near the coast and only large individuals are found upstream. It feeds on small shrimps and fishes and it has pelagic eggs and larvae (Bussing and Lopez, 2005). According to Cooke (1992) this species is regularly found in middle estuaries, mangroves, bar-formed lagoons and upper estuaries along the tropical eastern Pacific coast. It has also been found in a high saline lake in Salton Sea in California (Pezold and Cage, 2002), but it is not clear if this is the result of an introduction.
Systems: Freshwater; Marine
