Taxonomic Notes: Subgenus (Chromaphyosemion). Aphyosemion kouamense Legros, 1999, Aphyosemion melanogaster (Legros, Zentz & Agnèse, 2005), Aphyosemion malumbresi Legros & Zentz, 2006, Aphyosemion erythron (Sonnenberg, 2007) and Aphyosemion ecucuense (Sonnenberg, 2007) from a closely related southern group of species that were all formerly subsumed under Aphyosemion splendopleure (see Sonnenberg 2007a, 2007b) and all characterised by numerous red spots in the unpaired fins.

Habitat and Ecology: Aphyosemion (Chromaphyosemion) splendopleure generally occurs in still waters of brooks and small streams in the coastal rain forest on soils derived from Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary deposits (Wildekamp et al. 1986). It is a benthopelagic, non-migratory species. Aphyosemion (Chromaphyosemion) splendopleure is not a seasonal killifish. This species is difficult to maintain in aquarium (Huber 1996).
