Puntius thelys is restricted to less than 20,000 km2 range. However, it is known from 17 localities in Myanmar and well adapted in different types of bodies. More research needed to find out exact distribution, population, and threats. It also occurs in the Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary. The species is therefore assessed as Least Concern.

The threats to the species are not known.
The species is present in Indawgyi lake Wildlife Sanctuary in Myanmar.
