Taxonomic Notes: Kullander (2008) described Puntius thelys from the streams near Myitkyina, and Lake Indawgyi, Myanmar. The species valid as Puntius thelys Kullander 2008 (Kullander and Britz 2008).

Pethia thelys is restricted to less than 20,000 km² range. However, it is known from 17 localities in Myanmar and well adapted in different types of bodies. More research needed to find out exact distribution, population, and threats. It also occurs in the Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary. The species is therefore assessed as Least Concern.
