Scientific Name: Opuntia jamaicensis Britton & Harris
Taxonomic Notes: This species was described by Britton and Harris in 1911.  This species is listed as potentially synonymous of O. tuna by Hunt et al. 2006.  Adams (1972) reports both O. tuna and O. jamaicensis for Jamaica, but they are not sympatric in the wild.  O. tuna, however, is widely cultivated.

Range Description:This species is endemic to Jamaica, from Saint Catherine (Britton and Rose 1919). It occurs from sea level to eight meters (Adams 1972).

Population:Adams (1972) reports that O. jamaicensis is very locally abundant in St. Catherine and Manchester parishes, which are found along the central southern coast. The population size for this species is unknown.

Habitat and Ecology:This species occurs in plains in tropical dry shrubland. Adams (1972) reports that it forms pure stands near mangrove and logwood thickets and salinas in heavy silt alluvium.
