Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
Animalia Arthropoda Insecta Odonata Platystictidae

Scientific Name: Protosticta khaosoidaoensis Asahina, 1984
Taxonomic Notes: A subspecies, P. k. satoi Asahina, 1997 has been described from north Viet Nam. However P. k. satoi was described from a single female; given the similarity of many species of Protosticta to one another, this female is as likely to belong to some other, unnamed, species as to a subspecies P. khaosoidaoensis. Until males are discovered, records from Viet Nam should be treated as unverified.

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Vulnerable D2 ver 3.1
Year Published: 2009
Date Assessed: 2007-05-16
Assessor(s): Dow, R.A.
Reviewer(s): Kalkman, V. & Clausnitzer, V. (Odonata Red List Authority)
Justification:
This species is known from a few records from two provinces in Thailand and a questionable record from north Vietnam. The areas of Thailand where there species has been found are relatively well sampled, suggesting that the species may be genuinely scarce, however it may well be present in other parts of Thailand and in Myanmar. Leaving aside the record from Vietnam, the total number of locations from which the species has been recorded is less than five, accordingly it is listed as Vulnerable under criterion D2. When further information becomes available, the threat status of this species might have to change. Its habitat is under threat from large-scale deforestation for agricultural purposes and there are no records suggesting that it can survive in secondary forest.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:Known from Thailand where there are records from Chiang Mai and the Khao Soi Dao mountains in Chanthaburi (Asahina 1984, 1990; Hämäläinen and Pinratana 1999; Dow 2007) and possibly north Viet Nam (Asahina 1997, subspecies satoi, see Taxonomic Notes).
Countries occurrence:
Native:
Thailand

Population [top]

Population:At least 12 specimens have been collected in the Khao Soi Dao mountains in Chanthaburi (Asahina 1984, 1990 and a photographic record by O. Kosterin on the Asia Dragonfly website [http://www.asia-dragonfly.net] 2005), fewer have been collected in Chiang Mai. The record from Viet Nam is of a single female, and its identity is questionable (see Taxonomic Notes).
Current Population Trend:Unknown
Additional data:
Population severely fragmented:Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:The species has been collected on forest streams on hills and mountains.
Systems:Freshwater

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Large scale habitat loss through the clear-cutting of forest for agricultural use is a known threat to this species.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Further data is needed on this species. Searches need to be made in hilly and mountainous areas throughout Thailand, and in Viet Nam.
