Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Vulnerable B2ab(iii) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2017
Date Assessed: 2011-07-27
Assessor(s): Griffith, P. & Nassar, J.
Reviewer(s): Chanson, J.S. & Goettsch, B.K.
Facilitator/Compiler(s): García, N.
Justification:
This species is listed as Vulnerable because of its small distribution (Extent of Occurrence is approximately 12,000 km2), occurrence in only two locations, and the threat of habitat destruction through deforestation. Habitat destruction is reducing the distribution and habitat quality of this species. Loss of forest coverage where the species has been recorded has likely resulted in extirpation in one of two known locations. If more information becomes available confirming extirpation in one location or estimating the area of occupancy, this species is likely to qualify for a higher category of threat.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:Pereskia marcanoi is endemic to Hispanola, present in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The species was first described from an individual found growing on bare limestone rock in the municipality of Bánica in the Elías Piña province (Areces-Mallea 1992), at elevations of around 500 m asl. Collections of this species made in Haiti in the 1920s are likely extirpated (P. Griffith pers. comm. 2011). However, as this cannot be confirmed without surveying the area, these collections are taken into consideration for this assessment.

Population [top]

Population:There is no information about population, although Leuenberger indicates that it occurs in very limited localities.
Current Population Trend:Unknown
Additional data:
Population severely fragmented:No

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:This species occurs in semi-deciduous forest (Hunt et al. 2006).
Systems:Terrestrial

Use and Trade [top]

Use and Trade: There is no information on use or trade of this species.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Habitat degradation as a result of extensive deforestation is the major threat in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, especially in the border region between the two countries. In general, less than 5% of the original forest coverage is left.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Habitat protection and restoration are needed. Research is proposed to survey for the number of plants in the population.

Amended [top]

Amended reason: The species distribution map has been included.
