Scientific Name: Trinomys moojeni
Species Authority: (Pessôa, Oliveira & Reis, 1992)
Taxonomic Notes: This species was described in 1992 (Pessôa et al. 1992). Formerly placed in the genus Proechimys, but see Lara and Patton (2000) for reasons to place this taxon in the genus Trinomys.

This species is listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence is less than 5,000 km², all individuals are in fewer than five locations, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. Very few specimens, limited to two localities, found at higher elevations, ongoing threats to habitat through deforestation and forest fires.

Range Description:This species is restricted to the southern Espinhaco massif in east-central Minas Gerais state, Brazil (Fabre 2016; Pessôa et al. 2015). More recently it has been reported from Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipo (Paschoal et al. 2004, Pessôa et al. 2015) and Serra do Caraca Private Reserve (Cordeiro and Talamoni 2006, Pessôa et al. 2015).

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:This species occurs in forest lands above 1,000 m all and is present at the border between Cerrado and Atlantic Forest (Leite pers. comm.). In one study males were predominantly captured in the dry season and females in equal numbers in both dry and rainy seasons (Cordeiro and Talamoni 2006, Pessôa et al. 2015).

Major Threat(s): The major threats are deforestation and destruction of habitat; also, there are frequent fires in its range.
