Justification:
The extent of occurrence (EOO) of this species covers less than 8,350 km2. This geographic range is severely fragmented and undergoing continuing decline in area, extent and quality of habitat. Based on these premises, the species is listed as Vulnerable.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:

Currently, this species is known only from the type locality of Andasibe and surrounding regions (for example, Maromizaha Forest, including the two protected areas Analamazaotra Special Reserve and Mantadia National Park (Kappeler et al. 2005, Roos and Kappeler 2006). More recent analyses of samples from Tsinjoarivo classified forest have been identified as M. lehilahytsara (D. Weisrock pers. comm), meaning that the southern limit of its distribution might be the Onive/Mangoro river complex, although this boundary could be as far south as Ranomafana National Park, where it is replaced by M. rufus,. The extent of the distribution of this species to the north is still unknown, but it could extend as far north as the Betampona Strict Nature Reserve and Zahamena Strict Nature Reserve and National Park, where it is replaced by M. simmonsi (Roos and Kappeler 2006). Finally, Radespiel et al. (2012) has pointed out that this species appears to be restricted to higher altitudes “highland specialist”; therefore its extent of occurrence within this broader range may be smaller than previously thought, and should be actively investigated. The EOO is estimated to measure less than 8,350km2.

Population [top]

Population:

Population densities estimated by Ganzhorn (1988) to be 110 +/- 34 individuals/km2 at Andasibe. This study was first published as M. rufus as this species was only discovered in 2005. Population densities estimated by M. Blanco at Tsinjoarivo forest were 132 individuals/km2 at a forest fragment and 80 individuals/km2 at a continuous forest site. These data are unpublished (M. Blanco pers. comm.).

Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: An inhabitant of the eastern rainforests. Individuals have also been observed in patches of old eucalyptus plantations where they move through the understory without descending to the ground (Ganzhorn 1987). Its behaviour has been studied in Andasibe, where Ganzhorn (1988, 1989) found it to be a mainly solitary species, feeding on fruits and insects in shrubs and low trees as well as in the upper canopy of the forest.
Systems: Terrestrial

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): This species is threatened by habitat destruction from unsustainable agricultural practices.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions:

Listed on CITES Appendix I. It is known to occur in two national parks (Analamazaotra and Mantadia) as well as in the Anjozorobe-Angavo Protected Area, Tsinjoarivo classified forest and may be found in the Mangerivola Special Reserve. As of 2009 there were approximately two dozen individuals of this species in captivity, most of them in Switzerland and in the Tsimbazaza Zoo in Antananarivo, Madagascar (E. E. Louis Jr. pers. obs., I. J. Porton pers. comm.).
