The species was last recorded in the 1960s. There have been many studies within the species range which have all failed to find the species. Most recently in 2001, 2002 (J. Freyhof, pers. comm.) and 2003 (N. Bogutskaya, pers. comm.) where survey work in the Danube delta in the species habitat all failed to find the species. It is unknown why the species has gone extinct.
