Common Name/s:
English Javan White-eye

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Near Threatened ver 3.1
Year Published: 2012
Assessor/s: BirdLife International
Reviewer/s: Butchart, S. & Symes, A.
Contributor/s:
Justification:
Although this species remains abundant in suitable habitat, it has a highly restricted and fragmented range, and is likely to be declining moderately rapidly as a result of habitat loss. It is currently considered Near Threatened, and should be carefully monitored.

History:
2008 Near Threatened
2004 Near Threatened

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Zosterops flavus is restricted to Java and southern Kalimantan, Indonesia, with one record from Sarawak, Malaysia. The population on Java is restricted in range (but apparently very common where it does occur) while recent records from Kalimantan suggest the species might be locally common in mangrove on the south coast.

Population [top]

Population: The population size of this species has not been quantified, but it is described as locally common.
Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: This species occurs in mangroves, coastal scrub, relict coastal forest and scattered trees.

Systems: Terrestrial

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): This species is likely to be threatened by the destruction and degradation of mangrove forests and other forest habitats, although further studies are needed in order to determine whether it persists in degraded habitats.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Conservation Actions Underway

Conservation Actions Proposed
Conduct ecological studies to determine the response of this species to habitat degradation and fragmentation. Monitor population and habitat trends throughout the range. Protect significant areas of suitable forest at sites where it is known to be common.
