Taxonomic Notes: The relationship between Hirthia and Lavigeria is under discussion. Species in this genus may be members of the Lavigeria clade (E. Michel, pers. comm.).

Justification:
The EOO of this species is less than 5,000 km². It is only known from two sites although it is possible that further surveys may locate more sites for this species. There is a declining quality of habitat due to settlements and disturbance.

Range Description: This species is endemic to Lake Tanganyika. It is recorded from Ufipa and Mtossi (Tanzania) on the south-eastern shore (Michel et al. 2003).
