Taxonomic Notes: A recent publication changed the generic name of this species to Hyporthodus (Craig and Hastings 2007) and a change of family name to Epinephelidae (Smith and Craig 2007).

Justification:
Hyporthodus perplexus is known only from the holotype, which was taken in deep water. The species may have a wider distributional range, but presently nothing is known of the population or the biology of this species. Further assessments are suggested as data become available.

Population: Hyporthodus perplexus has an unknown population abundance.
Population Trend: Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Hyporthodus perplexus is known only from the holotype collected by the FIV 'Endeavour'. Collected between 129 to 137 m. The absence of additional specimens may indicate that this species normally inhabits deeper waters. The size of the holotype specimen is 465 mm SL/565 mm TL.

Major Threat(s): Hyporthodus perplexus is apparently a rare, deepwater species. No current known threats. It is not part of any known fishery. Possible limited distribution.
