Justification:
Widespread and common throughout low-veld stretches of east coast rivers from the Limpopo to the Phongolo. Some threats but these are localized.

Range Description: Most common in lowveld reaches of the Limpopo, Incomati and Phongolo systems in South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland. Described from the upper reaches of the Limpopo system in Botswana.

Population: Abundant in suitable habitats.

Habitat and Ecology: Typically found in main river channels over sandy substrates. Does well in dams.
Systems: Freshwater

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): A migratory species that is particularly susceptible to the impacts of weirs and net fishing. Susceptible to sedimentation.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Fishways should be incorporated into weirs where possible. Management of riverine fisheries is needed in many areas. Improved land-use management aimed at reducing erosion.
