| Range Description: |
Barbus barotseensis is a widespread benthopelagic species within central and southern Africa. Central Africa: Barbus barotseensis is known from the southern tributaries of the Congo River system. Southern Africa: This species is widely distributed but rare in the upper Zambezi floodplains (Tweddle et al. 2004), found only in one northern tributary system, the Mwombezhi. It also occurs in the Cunene, Okavango, and southern tributaries of the Congo (Skelton 2001). |

| Habitat and Ecology: | Barbus barotseensis is a benthopelagic species. It inhabits shallow calm waters amongst vegetation, along the river edge (Bell-Cross and Minshull 1988, Tweddle et al. 2004). Ripe adults were caught undertaking upstream migration on a possible spawning run in mid summer after the first rise in water level (Bell-Cross and Minshull 1988). |
| Systems: | Freshwater |
| Major Threat(s): | Given the wide distribution and extensive suitable habitat, there are no major threats to this species. |
| Conservation Actions: | Research into population numbers and range for this species is needed, as well as its biology and ecology. In Zambia, its known distribution falls partially within the Kasanka National Park around Lake Bangweulu. |
