| Taxonomic Notes: | Possibly a species complex. Numerous populations of spotted barbs occur down the east African coast. The specific status of many of these populations needs further examination.
Inland specimens similar to B. annectens enter the middle Zambezi (Zambia and Zimbabwe) and into the lower Shire (Malawi). According to D. Tweddle these are not B. annectens but an undescribed spotted barb species. The taxonomy of these populations needs to be determined also. |

Justification: Widespread in the rivers of the south-east African coastal plain (South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique). Possibly extending inland into Zimbabwe and Zambia along the middle Zambezi. Abundant in suitable habitats. No where seriously threatened. |

| Range Description: | Low-veld regions of larger east-coast rivers from the Zambezi (Mozambique) south to Mkuze in Kwazulu-Natal (South Africa). Inland, the identity of specimens in the middle Zambezi (Zambia and Zimbabwe) and lower Shire (Malawi) needs to be studied. |
