Taxonomic Notes:

Some specimens from Kataba River lack characteristic black tail bars and are generally duskier, some almost black (Tweddle et al. 2004). Taxonomic study is needed.

Justification: Widespread and fairly common.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:	Known from the Upper Zambezi and Kafue river systems, as well as the Cunene and Okavango Rivers, and recently recorded from the Middle Zambezi above Lake Kariba (Skelton 2001). Absent from northern tributaries of the Zambezi in Zambia (Tweddle et al. 2004).

Population:	Fairly common and widely distributed.

Habitat and Ecology:	Occurs in a wide variety of shallow habitats including main river channels, flowing tributaries and drying pools, but absent from rocky stretches. In main river channels it is restricted to shallow sites out of the main current such as behind sand bars and in vegetated areas (Tweddle et al. 2004).
