Endemic to Lake Malawi where it is common throughout the southern and western parts of the lake. No major widespread threats identified.

Population: Relatively common in demersal trawl catches.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Sand dwelling species occurring on sandy coasts, commonly found below 10 m depth. A molluscivore, feeding on snails from the silty bottom. Territorial males build their nests on the sand (shallow depressions). Females and non-territorial individuals occur in small groups or occur with other sand dwelling fishes. Max. size: 23 cm (males) and females may reach 15 cm in size. Known as "Maravichromis Anaphyrmus" in the aquarium trade.
