Endemic to Lake Malawi where it is confined to the eastern coast north of Chapola Shoal south to the area from Nkhudzi to the Nankhumba Peninsula. Also found at Domira Bay.

Occurs over sandy habitats where it feeds on chironomid larvae, detritus and algal remains. A female guarding fry has been observed off Thumbi East Island. Often caught in pair trawls, gill nets and seine nets.
