Normally occurs in the intermediate or rocky habitats. Feeds on cichlid fry or larvae. A male has been observed building a sand castle nest under an overhanging rock on top of a pile of rubble. It has been caught as deep as 92 m off Monkey Bay as well as being caught in shallower water in seine nets. Known as "Haplochromis Jack Dempsey" in the aquarium trade
