| Population: | Observed declining in Mtera dam (Chale and Mwaya 1984, Tamatamah 1996). Similarly a decline in population was reported for Mindu dam (Bwathondi and Kulekana 1986). The species composed less than 0.14% of fishery catches in the systems where present (Fish. Div. 1994, 1996). |

| Habitat and Ecology: | The species occupies open waters or the pelagic environment. It migrates up the rivers for spawning during the rainy season. It is carnivorous, feeding on invertebrates, especially zooplankton, snails and insect larvae. |
