Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern     ver 3.1
Year Published: 2010
Assessor/s: Bayona, J., Bills, R., Engelbrecht, J. & Kazembe, J.
Reviewer/s: Snoeks, J., Tweddle, D., Getahun, A., Lalèyè, P., Paugy, D., Zaiss, R., Fishar, M.R.A & Brooks, E.
Justification:
A widely distributed species effected by local decline. The wider population is, however, not impacted by any known widespread major threats, and is therefore listed as Least Concern. Although not abundant it is sufficiently widespread to be also classified as Least Concern in regional assessments for eastern and southern Africa.
History:
2006 Least Concern (IUCN 2006)

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Threats to this species include:
  • Mass kills due to asphyxiation. A serious event was observed in Tanzania in 1984.
  • Illegal fishing practice, especially by use of under meshed gill-nets and other illegal techniques.
  • Weed infestation and high turbidity.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: No information available. More research is needed into this species population numbers and range, biology and ecology, habitat status and threats, as well as monitoring and potential conservation measures. Sustainable management of riverine fisheries is also needed.
