Scientific Name: Haplochromis cyaneus
Species Authority: Seehausen, Bouton & Zwennes, 1998 [nom. inval.]
Taxonomic Notes: Medium sized species with steep, moderately convex dorsal head profile, small mouth, forcep like dentition and a conspicuous melanin pattern of longitudinal stripes and vertical bars. Pronounced sexual dimorphism in colouration and head length.

The name of this species is objectively invalid; preoccupied by Haplochromis cyaneus Trewavas 1935, which is treated as a synonym of Copadichromis cyaneus.

Justification:
Distributed in very few locations (less than five) and extent of occurrence <5,000 km². Habitat quality and quantity are declining due to eutrophication and increased turbidity.

Range Description: Distributed across three islands in south eastern Lake Victoria: Chamagati (Sengerema Region), Makobe (South Western Speke gulf), and Nansio (Ukerewe). Thought to be absent from other areas of the lake.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Restricted to rocky substrates. It lives and feeds exclusively on the surface of rocky substrates (Seehausen et al. 1998). It feeds on Chironomid larvae with filamentous algae, diatoms and insects. It is a mouth brooder with parental care.
