Range Description: The species is endemic to Lake Tanganyika where it is widely distributed. It is also found in the associated Rusizi and the Rukuga Rivers.

Habitat and Ecology: Aulonocranus dewindti is not a deep-water fish and is always found over sand, even if only sandy patches between rocks, or sandy shallows. Schools of Aulonocranus dewindti occur in coastal and offshore waters over sandy bottoms. The species is omnivorous, feeding on drifting mater. Reproduction: mouthbrooder.
