Scientific Name: Xenoclarias eupogon
Species Authority: (Norman, 1928)
Common Name/s:
English Lake Victoria Deepwater Catfish
Taxonomic Notes: Also reported as Clarias eupogon (antiquated binomen).

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered   A2bcde   ver 3.1
Year Assessed: 2006
Assessor/s: Hanssens, M. & Snoeks, J.
Reviewer/s: Snoeks, J. (Freshwater Fish Red List Authority) & Darwall, W. (Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment Programme)
Justification:
This species is endemic to the Lake Victoria drainage from where it was last recorded in 1997. It is thought that the species may have become extinct following intense predation by the Nile Perch (Lates niloticus), increased eutrophication of the lake, and possibly through overfishing. More surveys on a lake-wide scale are required to evaluate the "Possibly Extinct" status.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Endemic to the Lake Victoria drainage. Goudswaard and Witte (1997) report that this species may have become extinct due to predation by Nile perch and other recent ecological impacts.

Kenya
