Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA ACTINOPTERYGII CYPRINIFORMES CYPRINIDAE

Scientific Name: Barbus apleurogramma
Species Authority: Boulenger, 1911
Common Name/s:
English East African Red Finned Barb
Taxonomic Notes: The genus Barbus (Cyprinidae) is restricted to a small number of species mainly inhabiting the European ichthyographic region including Northeast Africa. Most of the African species that are currently included in the genus, taxonomically do not appear to be closely related to the genus Barbus sensu strictu. However, no attempts have yet been made at an adequate nomenclature of the African forms. We therefore follow Berrebi et al. (1996) and use in this paper the term ‘Barbus’ for the cyprinid fish species which were previously considered as Barbus (Seegers et al., unpublished).Barbus amboseli banister, 1980 a junior synonym of B. apleurogramma (De Vos and Seegers, work in progress), was listed with a query from the Tana River by Skelton (1994). As currently known, the species does not occur in the Tana River system (Seegers et al., unpublished).

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern     ver 3.1
Year Assessed: 2006
Assessor/s: Ntakimazi, G., Twongo, T.K. & Hanssens, M.
Reviewer/s: Snoeks, J. (Freshwater Fish Red List Authority) & Darwall, W. (Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment Programme)
Justification:
Small species found in permanent and temporary streams across a wide geographic range. Water turbidity and siltation due to erosion on watershed and farming extension represent locally the major threats but there are no known widespread threats to the species.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Lake Victoria basin, Lake Kanyaboli, Amboseli swamps, Athi River system (including Mzima springs, Tsavo drainage) (Seegers et al. unpub.). Lake Kivu and Rusizi drainage; Upper and Middle Akagera system; Malagarasi river; Lake Rukwa system; and various localities in the coastal region near Dares salaam. Lakes Edward, George and Albert systems. Lake Nabugabo and the Aswa River (Upper Nile)

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Inhabit inshore waters of lakes and rivers, including fast-flowing waters. Varied food, including aquatic vegetation, mollusc and fishes (Welcomme 1969). Common in temporary and permanent streams. It occurs in water lily swamps on the edge of lakes (Okedi 1971).
Systems: Freshwater
