Listed as Near Threatened because its extent of occurrence is probably not much greater than 20,000 km², and it occurs in several small, widely separated subpopulations, thus making the species close to qualifying for Vulnerable based on range size and decline (criteria B1b(iii)).

Population:	C. argentinus is composed of lots of fragmented populations (Bidau, 2006).

Habitat and Ecology:	The claws and teeth are specialized for fossorial life (Wilson and Reeder 2005, Mora et al. 2003). It is found in regions of sandy soils (Barquez et al. 2006).
