Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA AMPHIBIA ANURA STRABOMANTIDAE

Scientific Name: Pristimantis lancinii
Species Authority: (Donoso-Barros, 1965)
Common Name/s:
Spanish Ranita Paramera De Lancini
Synonym/s:
Eleutherodactylus lancinii Donoso-Barros, 1968
Eupsophus lancinii Donoso-Barros, 1965
Mucubatrachus lancinii La Marca, 2007
Taxonomic Notes: La Marca (2007) recently erected the genus Mucubatrachus to accommodate species that have a dermal fold posterior to the urostyle and before the cloaca. Hedges et al. (2008), however, subsequently placed Mucubatrachus in the synonymy of Pristimantis.

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Endangered   B1ab(v)   ver 3.1
Year Published: 2008
Assessor/s: Enrique La Marca
Reviewer/s: Ariadne Angulo and Simon Stuart
Justification:
Listed as Endangered because its Extent of Occurrence is less than 5,000 km2, all individuals are in fewer than five locations, and there is continuing decline in the number of mature individuals, on the Páramo de Mucubají.
History:
2004 Endangered

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Pristimantis lancinii can be found in the Cordillera de Mérida, within the National Parks of Sierra Nevada and Sierra de la Culata, in the states of Mérida and Trujillo, Venezuela, in subpáramo and páramo habitats, between 2500 and 3400 masl (La Marca, 2007).
Countries:
Native:
Venezuela (Venezuela (mainland))

Population [top]

Population: It is now very difficult to find (Barrio-Amorós, 2001), and populations are believed to be experiencing declines (although the exact rate of decline is not known).
Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Pristimantis lancinii is a terrestrial inhabitant of páramo grassland that breeds by direct development.

In the region of Mucubají, Pristimantis lancinii is sympatric with Pristimantis paramerus, Pristimantis kareliae, Paramophrynella ginesi, Atelopus mucubajiensis and Aromobates leopardalis. The species can be found amid vegetation and under rocks and moss next to streams. P. lancinii was abundant in April 1981; however, it was difficult to find in the month of November of the same year (La Marca, 2007).
Systems: Terrestrial

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): The major threat to the species is habitat loss, due to agriculture (involving both crops and livestock) and fires. However, most of the populations are within relatively well-managed protected areas, and the cause of the decline within these is not known, though chytridiomycosis cannot be ruled out.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: The most important protected area from which this species has been recorded is Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada. Further research is needed to determine the reason for the observed population declines.
