Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Endangered   A2ac   ver 3.1
Year Published: 2011
Assessor/s: Vidthayanon, C.
Reviewer/s: Rainboth, W., Ng, H.H. & Allen, D.
Justification:
Recorded from Thailand in the Mae Khlong and Chao Phraya basins, and from the Mekong in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Thailand. It is possibly found in naturally small populations, but populations across its range are inferred to have declined by 60%.

It is assessed as Endangered as a result of its inferred population decline of 60% in the last three generations (c.10 years), based on observation of populations in Thailand. Whilst population declines within the Mekong are likely to be lower than this, they would be impacted by dam development within the basin.
History:
1996 Critically Endangered (Baillie and Groombridge 1996)
1994 Rare (Groombridge 1994)
1990 Rare (IUCN 1990)
1988 Rare (IUCN Conservation Monitoring Centre 1988)
1986 Rare (IUCN Conservation Monitoring Centre 1986)

Native:
Cambodia; Lao People's Democratic Republic; Thailand

Population [top]

Population: Rare in Thailand, the species is uncommon elsewhere, and found in low numbers. It is possibly found in naturally small populations. The species is estimated to have declined by 60% across its range, mostly within Thailand, as a result of habitat loss.
Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Found in large rivers; found on the surface of rivers in mainstream rivers in schools.
Systems: Freshwater

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Habitat degradation in Thai rivers and marshland. Future Mekong mainstream dams are thought likely to impact the species; populations from impounded parts of the Chao Phraya basin in Thailand have been lost.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Further information needed on species distributions and ecology is needed in order to protect habitats.
