Justification:
A rare terrestrial herb endemic to Andean Ecuador, where it is apparently confined to the watersheds of the Patate and Chambo rivers in the central sierra, just below the paramo and in sites near cultivated fields. Several collections have been made near Riobamba, and one small population was recently discovered near the Laguna Quilotoa. Recorded more then 50 years ago in Pichincha province, but not located there since. Apparently threatened by the spread of agriculture and grazing in the densely populated inter-Andean area of Cotopaxi, Tungurahua and Chimborazo provinces.
