Justification:
A tree endemic to Ecuador and the only species in a recently described genus endemic to that country. Known from three populations on the Ecuadorian coast: in the western foothills of the Andes, near Manta Real in the province border between Azuay, Cañar and Guayas provinces; on the top of Cerro Cimalón, inside the Reserva Ecológica Manglares-Churute, in Guayas province; and 350 km to the northwest, in the Reserva Ecológica Mache-Chindul, near the Río Sucio in Esmeraldas province. As of 2000, fewer than 100 individuals had been found. Additional populations may exist and should be sought out in ecologically similar areas. The species' wood is highly valued by loggers.
