Justification: A tree or shrub endemic to coastal Ecuador, where two of the three populations have been destroyed. The last remaining population, with 30 individuals, is in the Bosque Protector Cerro Pata de Pájaro, close to Pedernales, in Manabí province. Historically recorded close to Quinindé and in the coastal hills near Santa Ana. One of the few species of Bauhinia with red flowers and with great potential as an ornamental tree. Cultivated ex situ in the Missouri Botanical Garden, at Duke University, and at the Ecuadorean National Herbarium. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known. |
