Justification: Listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence (and AOO) is very restricted (less than 500 km²) because it is endemic to the streams and freshwater habitats on Idjiwi island in Lake Kivu, and all individuals are in just two localities. Population size is estimated at less than 2,500 mature individuals over the entire range. Continuing decline in extent of occurrence is inferred from the lack of recent collections anywhere in its range since 1942. P. idjiwiensis has been known to scientists for more than 60 years and yet still has only a poor representation in museum collections (only a handful of specimens are known). There are potential threats that may result in a decline in the extent and quality of its habitat and this species is not found in a protected area. |
