Justification:
Recorded only five times since the type was collected in 1842. Likely to be at risk from over-grazing, burning and agricultural improvement of its heathland habitat.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Antarctic Cudweed is endemic to the Falkland Islands. The only confirmed material of this species is the type specimen collected near Berkeley Sound in 1842. More recently R. Brännström reported the species from three 10 km grid squares, one each from Saunders, Pebble and Berkeley Sound.

Habitat and Ecology: Dwarf shrub heath, found at an elevational range of 0-60 m.

Major Threat(s): Grazing, habitat degradation and habitat modification are likely to be key factors in the species present scarcity.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Antarctic Cudweed currently receives no legal protection in the Falkland Islands (FIG 1999). The current action plan objectives for Gamochaeta antarctica (Broughton 2002) are:
1. To maintain the current distribution of Antarctic Cudweed and ensure the continued survival of viable populations.
2. To ensure rapid ex situ conservation.
