Justification:
Listed as Critically Endangered as the current population of the subspecies is no more than four individuals (all surviving in the Garamba National Park in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo), down from an estimated 2,230 individuals in 1960. Worryingly, recent surveys undertaken in Garamba have failed to confirm the presence of the subspecies in this area.
