| Habitat and Ecology: | It inhabits upstream regions surrounded by primary broad-leaved evergreen forest, where it breeds in streams. It preys mainly on crustaceans and earthworms. |

| Major Threat(s): | Until the early 1970s this species ranged over nearly the entire northern half of the island. However, recent deforestation accompanied by road and dam construction in its original range has drastically reduced its habitat. It has also been impacted by invasive mongooses. |
| Conservation Actions: | It has been designated a natural monument by the Okinawa Prefecture and is totally protected. However, there remains a need for improved protection of the habitat of this species in northern Okinawa. |
