Justification: A tree endemic to Andean Ecuador, where it is known from three populations. The type specimen was collected in an undetermined locale of Azuay province by W. Camp in 1945. The other populations are from an undetermined locale of Chimborazo and from a remnant forest at km 25 of the Loja–Saraguro road, at 2,600 m elevation. Not known to occur in Ecuador’s protected areas network, but expected in the Parque Nacional Podocarpus. The principal threats are mining, deforestation, and disorganized colonization. Classified as Vulnerable in 1998 (Oldfield et al. 1998). |
