Justification:
A shrub or tree endemic to Andean Ecuador, where it is known from 15 populations from Carchi to Zamora-Chinchipe and occasionally cultivated. There is a population in the Refugio Silvestre Pasochoa and near the Reserva Ecológica El Angel and the Parque Nacional Cajas. The species can be very common in disturbed vegetation along roads. Six trees > 5 cm diameter were found in a one-hectare inventory in Pasochoa (Valencia and Jørgensen 1992). Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
