Justification: A tree endemic to coastal Ecuador. Until 1998, this species was known only from two locales in Los Ríos province: the Jauneche private reserve and a forest remnant at the Estación Experimental Pichilingue, near Quevedo. In Jauneche the species is abundant both in primary forest and in disturbed forest. Recently discovered in the northern coast of Manabí, between Jama and Pedernales, in the largest remaining remnant of wet coastal forest in Ecuador. Additional populations may occur in the Reserva Ecológica Mache-Chindul. Considered Endangered due to its small range and large-scale destruction of coastal forests over the last 50 years. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known. |
