Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA MAMMALIA RODENTIA CRICETIDAE

Scientific Name: Calomys musculinus
Species Authority: (Thomas, 1913)
Common Name/s:
English Drylands Vesper Mouse
Taxonomic Notes: Included in C. laucha by Hershkovitz (1962) but morphological and karyotypic evidence supports its specific status (Corti et al. 1987). Synonymy follows Massoia et al. (1968) and Contreras and Rosi (1980), who considered murillus a subspecies of C. musculinus; others have treated the former as a species (Reig 1986). In the molecular study of Salazar-Bravo et al. (2001), it is noteworthy that their sample of C. musculinus from Buenos Aires Province, presumably referable to murillus proper (type locality La Plata, Buenos Aires Prov.), was genetically like population samples drawn from NW Argentina, presumably referable to musculinus proper. Until the issue can be substantively resolved, we continue to view murillus as a subjective synonym. Further research into taxonomic issues is necessary.

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern     ver 3.1
Year Assessed: 2008
Assessor/s Pardinas, U. & D'Elia, G.
Evaluator/s: Amori, G. (Small Nonvolant Mammal Red List Authority) & Schipper, J. (Global Mammal Assessment Team)
Justification:
This species is listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining at nearly the rate required to qualify for listing in a threatened category.
History:
1996 Lower Risk/least concern

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: This species occurs in arid habitats over wide elevations in west central Bolivia (Anderson, 1997), western Paraguay, and Argentina (Jujuy and Salta provinces as far south as Chubut; Díaz 2000; Mares et al. 1997; Ortiz et al. 2000; Pearson 1995); limits uncertain (Musser and Carleton 2005). Pocasi et al. (2005) predict that the range extends to parts of Peru and Uruguay and Salazar-Bravo et al. (2001) suggest the range may extend as far as central Brazil - but no records have been found to validate these inferences.

Population: This species is abundant.
Population Trend: Stable

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: This species is seasonally reproductive, breeding during the longer photoperiods from spring to the beginning of autumn (Buzzio and Castro-Vasquez 2002). It is a highland species typically found at middle elevations above 1,000 m (Salazar-Bravo et al. 2001).This species occurs in lower abundances in disturbed areas and favours shrubland creosotebush habitats (Tabeni and Ojeda 2005). Found strongly associated with croplands in Argentine agroecosystems (Yahnke 2006).
Systems: Terrestrial

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): No major threats for this species.
